Wildflowers and Poppies in the Tuscan Valley

Oil on Canvas

On this particular painting I was trying something I’ve never tried before. I always paint alla prima but my background is always white. I prime my pre-primed canvas with white primer, but on this one I wanted to try something a friend of mine, also artist does, which is prime the canvas with red oxide primer. I have to admit that it is quite different both painting with a darker background and the overall result.

This particular painting was inspired by a picture I took in Tuscany this past September 2004 while I was traveling with my husband and our 3 kids to visit my parents up in Gorizia, north of Italy. I was looking at the pictures of Tuscany, and this cute little house with this beautiful wild flowers field just popped out among all of them. The rich red colors of the red wild poppies were just asking me to be painted.

I try to paint the Tuscan landscapes and any other landscape the way I see them not the way everyone sees them. I like strong and bold vibrant colors because that’s the way I view them while I’m standing there making sketches and taking pictures. My paintings are simple yet inviting and there is always something to find on them, whether is a flower you never saw before, the detail on the houses, the clouds, the sky, the mountains and everything and anything.

I hope you enjoy my new painting as much as I enjoyed painting it. Up to next time!
